Dr. Miao Xu

Miao Xu, Ph.D., Research Fellow. She is the Chief Expert of Biological Products Quality Control of National Institutes for Food and Drug Control. She is a member of the 12th Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission, a member of the National Immunization Program Expert Advisory Committee, and a member of the WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardization. As an expert receiving the State Council's special allowance, she has been awarded honors including the 23rd Wu Jieping–Paul Janssen Award in Medicine and Pharmacology. She has long been engaged in research on new technologies, methods, and standards for quality evaluation of vaccines and other biological products, dedicated to advancing innovative vaccine development in China, ensuring vaccine quality, and supporting the internationalization of Chinese vaccines. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she pioneered studies on the development of the methods and national standards for quality control of COVID-19 vaccines, with research outcomes applied in pre-market registration testing and post-market lot release testing. Her work contributed to the approval and emergency use authorization of Chinese COVID-19 vaccines, ensuring their reliable quality and timely supply, thus effectively supporting global pandemic response. In the field of tuberculosis, she developed a novel M.tb antigen-based skin test based on specific M.tb antigens, enabling convenient and accurate differentiation between tuberculosis infection and BCG vaccination. She established a comprehensive preclinical evaluation platform using mouse and guinea pig models, which encompasses evaluation of novel tuberculosis vaccines with different indications, such as prevention of Infection (PoI), prevention of Disease (PoD), prevention of Recurrence (PoR) and Therapeutic Vaccination (Thp). The above research will advance the progress of precision immunoprevention studies in countries with a high burden of tuberculosis. Leveraging the WHO Collaborating Center for Biological Standardization, she actively participates in the development and revision of international standards for biological products. She led her laboratory to successfully pass WHO assessments for the National Regulatory Authority's vaccine control system and for the Prequalification (PQ) Contracted Laboratory, facilitating the global access of Chinese vaccines. She has received top scientific awards including the Beijing Science and Technology Award (First Class), the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association Science and Technology Award (First Class), the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association Science and Technology Award (First Class), and the Chinese Antituberculosis Association Science and Technology Award (First Class). She has led eight national-level key research projects, published more than 100 papers (with 50 indexed by SCI).
